Customise canonical paths to your website pages
Canonical tags are used to indicate the preferred version of a web page when there are multiple pages with similar or duplicate content. This is important for search engine optimisation (SEO) and effective website management.
Here are the main reasons why canonical paths might be used:
- Avoiding duplicate content: You may have multiple pages which have very similar content. Using canonical tags helps prevent these duplicates from being indexed separately by search engines, which can dilute the page's ranking.
- Parameter handling: Websites that use URL parameters for tracking or other purposes can end up with numerous URL variations. Canonical tags can be used to indicate the main version of a page, ignoring the parameters that don't affect the content.
- Consolidating link equity: By specifying a canonical URL, any link equity that might be distributed across multiple versions of a page is consolidated into a single, preferred version. This can help improve the search engine ranking of the canonical page.
Changing canonical URLs can influence how your site appears in search results. For example, you may have site pages for the same event on different dates. If all content on the page is the same except for the dates, search engines might split the ranking power among them, diluting the potential ranking of each page.
- https://www.[yourdomain].com/december-event
- https://www.[yourdomain].com/january-event
By default, a self-referencing canonical URL is added to all site pages on Easol. To adjust the canonical URL:
- Go to Site and select a site version.
- Select a page.
- Click the three-dot icon and select SEO.
- Include the Canonical path.
- Repeat steps 1-4 on other site pages as needed.
